Sequential effects in facial attractiveness judgments: Separating perceptual and response biases

نویسندگان

چکیده

When items are presented sequentially, the evaluation of current item is biased by both previous item’s value (perceptual bias) and response given (response bias). While these biases have been identified in judgements facial attractiveness, it unclear as to whether they produce assimilation and/or contrast effects. Here, two tasks were employed measure each bias isolation. By presenting a preceding face without collecting response, perceptual could be investigated, while considered requesting face. Our results demonstrated which attractiveness ratings shifted away from baseline face, we found no evidence due previously selected value. These findings highlight utility considering sequential separately when trying determine nature

Simultaneous perceptual and response biases on sequential face attractiveness judgments.

Face attractiveness is a social characteristic that we often use to make first-pass judgments about the people around us. However, these judgments are highly influenced by our surrounding social world, and researchers still understand little about the mechanisms underlying these influences. In a series of 3 experiments, we use a novel sequential rating paradigm that enables us to measure biases...

Children's Facial Trustworthiness Judgments: Agreement and Relationship with Facial Attractiveness

This study examined developmental changes in children's abilities to make trustworthiness judgments based on faces and the relationship between a child's perception of trustworthiness and facial attractiveness. One hundred and one 8-, 10-, and 12-year-olds, along with 37 undergraduates, were asked to judge the trustworthiness of 200 faces. Next, they issued facial attractiveness judgments. The ...

Computational models of facial attractiveness judgments.

We designed two computational models to replicate human facial attractiveness ratings. The primary model used partial least squares (PLS) to identify image factors associated with facial attractiveness from facial images and attractiveness ratings of those images. For comparison we also made a model similar to previous models of facial attractiveness, in that it used manually derived measuremen...

Interpreting ambiguous stimuli: Separating perceptual and judgmental biases

Interpreting ambiguous situations is not a purely data-driven process but can be biased towards positive interpretations by top-down influences. The present study tries to identify the underlying processes of these top-down influences. There are two separable types of processes that can be influenced by motivational biases: A perceptual bias affects information uptake whereas a judgmental bias ...
